How Does KYBELLA® Work?

Kybella® is the only FDA-approved injectable medical treatment that addresses submental fullness. Deoxycholic acid, Kybella’s® active ingredient, is a molecule our body already uses to break down and absorb fat elsewhere in our system. When injected into the submental area, it works to dissolve fat deposits in the neck and chin to reduce the fat pockets there, relieve the pressure on the skin and muscles struggling to hold the fatty tissue, and smooth out the jawline for a more chiseled, youthful profile. While it’s true there are a handful of exercises or diet techniques you can do to reduce your double chin, this area is particularly difficult to shape on your own. What Are KYBELLA® Treatments Like?

Customized treatment plans include 2-4 Kybella® sessions as needed for the best possible outcome. Each treatment will be scheduled approximately 4 weeks apart, and they take around 30 minutes to complete. Kybella® treatments are no more painful than most injection treatments, and patients frequently report injection site tenderness, swelling, bruising, redness, or numbness following a session. These mild side effects usually resolve within 48 hours, though some tenderness may persist for a couple of weeks. This is a normal reaction to Kybella® treatments.

When Will I See Results?

Over a period of months, Kybella® will dissolve your submental fat. Many patients experience visible improvement within 2-4 sessions, but the change, while dramatic from a before-after perspective, is subtle. In fact, no one even needs to know you’ve had work done. Most friends and family ask if patients changed their hair or successfully lost weight. The time it takes to dissolve the submental fullness also means those fat deposits are gone. Generally, patients don’t require maintenance treatments after the initial Kybella® plan is executed unless there are significant fluctuations in weight. By maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle, you can reasonably keep the double chin at bay for the foreseeable future.
